How old does my child have to be to attend camp?
  • Little Vikes Day Camp - 4-5 year olds
  • Leif Ericson Day Camp - 6-9 year olds
  • Camp Tepeetonka - 10-13 year olds
  • TLC - Tepeetonka Leadership Camp - 14 year olds only
  • Explorers Travel Camp - 11-15 years old

Are campers separated into group of similar age and gender? Yes - All groups split by age and gender. Campers will all be participating in age appropriate activities.
  • Little Vikes - 4 and 5 together
  • Leif Ericson - 6 and 7 together and 8 and 9 together
  • Tepeetonka - 10 and 11 together and 12 and 13 together
  • Tepeetonka Leadership Camp – 14 year olds only

How are registrations distributed?


How do campers get to camp? Transportation is provided to and from camp each day from designated bus stops in Sioux Falls and surrounding areas. Check the Bus Transportation Schedule on the back of the camp registration form for specific stops.

All Leif Ericson and Tepeetonka Campers must be bused to camp from designated bus stops! No parental drop off available.

LITTLE VIKES - THERE IS NO TRANSPORTATION - THEY MUST BE PICKED UP AND DROPPED OFF AT THE YMCA EACH DAY


Where is camp?
Leif Ericson/Tepeetonka Day camp is located on 26th Street between I-229 and Southeastern Drive. (By Cliff Ave. Greenhouse.)
Little Vikes - meets at the Downtown YMCA- 230 South Minnesota


Is there before and after camp care? Yes - Sitter Service is available for 6-13 year olds for from 7:30am before camp and also available until 5:30pm everyday after camp.
NO SITTER SERVICE FOR LITTLE VIKES
The rate is the low low price of $50 per camper.


What are some of the core activities at camp? BB guns, archery, crafts, boating, fishing, music, nature, horses, and much more- check out brochure for more information
ALL ACTIVITIES, MEALS, AND ANY OTHER EXPENSES ARE INCLUDED IN THE CAMP FEE- THE ONLY EXTRA COST IS IF THE CAMPER CHOOSES TO BUY MERCHANDISE


Do the younger campers participate in the same activities at the older campers? No. They all participate in the same core activities but they are age appropriate to that group. Camp is based on progression. The older they get, the more they get to choose from to increase excitement at camp.


What is Tepeetonka Explorers? Tepeetonka Explorers is a travel camp for 12 – 16 year olds. Campers ride in style in our YMCA owned motor coach bus to several unique and fun trip locations. Trips are filled with age appropriate activities such as: Amusement Parks, Science Museums, Water Parks and much much more. Click here for more information.


Is lunch provided? Yes - Daily lunch as well as dinner and breakfast for overnight nights. If they choose they can bring sack lunches. All meals are included in the fee.


When do I get my paddle and ole horn? These are two of many coveted attendance awards given at camp. Campers receive the first award (Ole Horn) after attending 3 years at camp.


What time does camp start each day? The campers get picked up any where from 7:30am-8:20am from their designated stop (you will receive this specified information with your confirmation packet after registration) Camp officially starts at 8:30am. Campers will then get dropped off at their same designated spots anywhere between 3:00pm-4:30pm depending upon their stop.


How are camper groups formed? Can I be with a friend? Your child may request up to 2 friends of same age and gender. Camper groups are limited to 12 campers per group. Camp staff works diligently to honor requests as best they can; although there are no guarantees.


When are overnights?
Leif Ericson 8-9 year olds – 2nd Thursday - this is at Leif Ericson Camp
Tepeetonka 10-13 – Both Thursday’s- alternating between camp and 1 off site location TBD


When are parent nights?
  • Leif Ericson 6-9 year olds – 2nd Thursday
  • Tepeetonka 10-11 year olds – 1st Thursday
  • Tepeetonka 12-13 year olds – No Parent Night
  • Little Vikes 4-5 year olds – No Parent Night Available


Is swimming available? Campers end each camp day with a refreshing swim at the YMCA’s indoor pool.


Can little Vikes attend Sitter Service? NO


My 9 year old is very mature can he attend camp Tepeetonka? No - only the specified ages is allowed in the upper camps- the programs are designed around specific age groups.
However - in rare occasions when requested we will let 10 year olds be in Leif or 12 year olds in a younger Tepee group.

Are there scholarships available? Yes - apply at Front Desk of the YMCA. They are granted on a sliding scale fee basis. Scholarships must be reviewed by the camp coordinator (MaryAnn) to decide level of financial assistance. (Only a limited number of financial scholarships are available.)


Can I switch camps? There are no guarantees that other spots will be open and there is a $10 processing fee for switching camps.

When and how does my child buy camp merchandise? There are t-shirts, hats, bags, water bottles, and other items available for purchase. Check is preferred, send your money with your child to camp (the first day is preferred) and their counselor will get them their things. Refunds will be given out at the end of camp for any unused money.


How I become a youth member? At the front desk of the YMCA - they are $60 per youth per year. Click here to download a membership application. They provide numerous discounts on several YMCA programs.


Do I need to pay the full fee upon registration? No - you do need to pay a $75 deposit upon registration. However, the remaining balance must be paid off by the time your child comes to camp.


How many weeks are in a camp session? Each camp session is 2 weeks in length and there are 5 camps to choose from.


Can I sign my child up for more than 1 camp? We do not encourage campers attending multiple sessions during 1 summer - if interested please contact Chuck Bennis

When will confirmation and transformation schedules be sent out? Received 1 week after your registration form is received


What are the capacities for camp? Camps do and will fill up quickly - we do have a waiting list available.


If I am put on a waiting list what are the chances of getting in? We recommend securing a “second choice” camp session if one is available to ensure a spot. Waiting lists are unpredictable.
