General Questions

What is the difference between Y-Hoopsters and Y-Rookies basketball programs?
  1. Y-Hoopsters is for Kindergarten and 1st grade
  2. Y-Rookies is for 2nd and 3rd grade.


When is the best time to register my child for YMCA K - 3rd grade basketball? Registration time –
August 13, 2007 to October 5, 2007 (registration at YMCA 230 s. Minnesota Ave. Sioux Falls)
  1. Late registrations after October 5th are accepted but do not guarantee placement with chosen school or friends.
  2. Players can be added to rosters until team reaches 10 players.

When does the season start? Season starts Saturday November 3, 2007 (through March 1, 2008)


Is practice held EVERY Saturday? No, practices are scheduled around most major holidays and school breaks.


When do I find out when and where the first practice is? Coaches will contact teams with practice information by October 26. They will also be available on the website.


How many Practices and Game will each team have? Season is scheduled for 12 Saturday dates throughout season.


Does the program offer more that just basketball?
  • Swimming - Every Saturday FREE swimming is offered to players at the YMCA.
  • Y-Rookies Fun Nights - Anyone can come; Y-Hoopsters will be scheduled for several discounted Family fun nights as part of their programs.
  • Tip-off Party - FREE, November 18, 2007, Washington, HS, 5:00pm.
  • Kickball - Y-Hoopsters (K-1) program will also include kickball for the last Saturday.


How do I receive information on registering my child?
  • Brochures will be delivered to ALL Sioux Falls Schools including Christian Schools.
  • Brochures are also delivered to surrounding Sioux Falls communities (i.e. Brandon, Valley Springs, Tea, Harrisburg, Tri-Valley, West Central, Renburg)
  • If your town is not listed please call YMCA for school delivery request.

When are practices?
  • YMCA K-3 Basketball runs on Saturdays for 45 minutes between 8:30am - 2:30pm.
  • Schedule of practice times will be handed out during the first practice, November 3, 2007. The schedule will also be available on the website.

Practices are 45 minutes in length between the hours of 8:30am - 3:30pm.

When are the practice/game dates this season?
Y-Rookies dates for 2007/2008: Nov. 3, 10, 17 (Dec. 1, 8, 15, 29) Jan. 5, 12, 19 (Feb. 2, 9, 23) Mar. 1


How do I volunteer to coach my child’s team? Indicate interest of coaching on registration. Each team has a coach and an assistant coach. Coaches are parent volunteers. Coaches receive 75% off an individual or discounted Family YMCA membership!!


What experience is needed to become a coach? K-3 grade YMCA basketball is a great time to begin coaching at any skill level. If you are good at working with children and have an interest in learning the game of basketball, you can do it!


How much does the program cost?
  • $15 with YMCA Family Membership
  • $80 without YMCA Family Membership


Does my child need prior basketball experience to join a YMCA team? YMCA Basketball is available to ALL students. No basketball experience necessary. Practices will focus on basic basketball skills such as: passing, dribble, shooting, and teamwork.


What is the philosophy of the YMCA basketball program?

Why is it good for kids to join team sports at a young age?
  • Develops the ABC’s of Sports - Agility, Balance and Coordination.
  • When kids play sports, they can have the opportunity to feel that they belong, feel like they are worthwhile just for being kids, be treated with respect and learn about a sense of emotional control.
  • They get a chance to be physically active and be with friends.


Where are practices located at? Practices and Games will take place at a local Sioux Falls school gymnasium. Locations will be given with the schedule on the first practice.


How competitive is the program?
  • Y-Hoopsters (K - 1) games, score will not be kept.
  • Y-Rookies (2nd - 3rd) games, scores are kept for 3rd grade only. Team standings are not kept.


How are teams divided?
  • Teams are divided by school, grade and gender.
  • Player may request to be with one friend.
  • K-3 will be divided into separate boys and girls teams
  • Each grade level is separated on to individual teams.
  • This league commonly has teams with 2-3 schools represented.


What equipment does my child need to play?
  • Shoes – any non-marking athletic shoe.
  • Basketball – YMCA provides basketballs at practices.
  • Jersey/T-Shirt – purchased by parent/player.


Do players use regulation balls and goals?
  • Y-Hoopsters will practice with 7 foot high hoops and size 4 basketballs
  • Y-Rookies will practice with 8.5 foot high hoops and size 5 basketballs


How much will each player have a chance to play? Each player is guaranteed 2 quarters of play during games.


Will team photos be available? Team photos will be taken at the Y-Rookie Challenge at a cost of $10.00.


Coach Questions

When will coaches be contacted with roster information? Rosters will be mailed out to the Coaches by October 22, 2007.


When are Coaches Meetings taking place? The meetings will take place in the YMCA game room (Downtown YMCA). This meeting is mandatory even if you have coached in the past.
  • October 16 at 6:30pm or 8:00pm
  • October 20 at 9:00am


Why are there players from my school not on my roster?
  • Late registration - player not placed yet.
  • School may have 2 teams - player placed on 2nd team.


Can I add more players to my team?
  • Sign up will continue until all teams are full (10 players).
  • If requested team is full, player will be placed on team with lowest roster.


What if I have questions about the program during the season?
  • Each gym site will be assigned with a YMCA supervisor.
  • Supervisors will often hand out important information to coaches and players.

Are referees parent volunteers? Yes, referees and time keepers are parent volunteers. Coaches may referee if they are objective and do not actively coach while refereeing on the court.


Can I schedule my team for additional practices during the season? Extra practices are not recommended. The YMCA will not schedule additional practices due to limitations of gym availability.
