Downtown YMCA to re-open as a new youth center

YMCA doubles down on its mission to serve the children and youth in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Sioux Falls Family YMCA has announced that it will officially transition its downtown location from a fitness facility to a youth development center, effective December 18, 2017.

“The critical need for quality child and youth programming in the downtown Sioux Falls area has grown exponentially in the past few years,” said Eric Tucker, President & CEO of the Sioux Falls YMCA.  “Kids need a safe, supportive environment to learn new skills and build healthy relationships.”

The repurposed Downtown YMCA will continue to offer access to basketball and racquetball courts, along with a new childcare center, game room, youth strength training center and gymnastics facility.  Programs will include after school, dance, cheer, martial arts, gymnastics, basketball, Pickle Ball, Ga Ga and indoor Wiffle Ball.  Plans are also underway for an indoor climbing area and high ropes course.  All children under the age of 18 will enjoy FREE access to the YMCA made possible by support from major donors and the Sioux Empire United Way.

The Downtown YMCA will primarily serve children and accompanying adults during after school hours and on Saturdays.

“The YMCA was a significant part of my youth when I joined 60 years ago,” said John Archer, Former Board Chairman.  “This transition will ensure that the YMCA continues to be strong and relevant for generations to come.”

The Sioux Falls Family YMCA has doubled the amount of children and youth it serves since 2014.  This year, over 15,000 children, ages 6-weeks through high school, have participated in YMCA programs.  The YMCA recently opened two new centers for afterschool, child care and gymnastics.  YMCA Camp Leif Ericson served over 8,000 campers and year-round guests in 2017.

The Downtown YMCA is located at 220 South Minnesota Avenue in Sioux Falls and more information can be found at
